We are a coalition of academic institutions advocating for the uptake of upstream SDoH in nursing practice

The Social Determinants of Health: A Global Practice Initiative (GPI) is a pioneering project that aims to explore how nurses can influence upstream social determinants of health (SDoH) globally to improve health outcomes and promote social justice through action, research, education, and advocacy. By equipping nurses with the knowledge and tools needed to tackle the upstream SDoH, we strive to create a more equitable and just healthcare system. The GPI, our international collaboration, unites public health and nursing experts from diverse fields to drive innovation, build capacity, and influence policy.

Action

The GPI explores actionable steps for nurses to influence the upstream determinants of health disparities. By engaging directly with communities and stakeholders, we aim to translate knowledge into practice, enabling nurses to make a meaningful impact on health equity and social justice.

Research

The GPI aims to conduct a Delphi study to identify effective strategies and barriers in addressing upstream SDoH through nursing practice. This method involves gathering expert opinions via iterative surveys to build consensus on best practices. Our research aims to develop actionable recommendations for advancing equitable healthcare globally.

Education

Our project emphasizes the importance of education in equipping nurses with the knowledge and skills to influence upstream SDoH in practice. Based on the study findings, we aim to integrate SDoH into nursing training, promoting a new generation of health professionals prepared to lead in the fight for health equity.

Advocacy

We advocate for systemic change by elevating the role of nurses in shaping health policy and promoting social justice by influencing upstream SDoH.

Our Mission

We Aim to Create Equitable Healthcare for All

The mission of the GPI is to establish frameworks and models for nurses worldwide to influence upstream SDoH through innovative action, research, education, and advocacy (AREA). By equipping nurses with essential knowledge and tools, we aim to enhance health outcomes, promote social justice, and create a more equitable healthcare system globally.

Through a combination of action, research, education, and advocacy, we influence the upstream SDoH, enabling nurses to make a profound impact on health outcomes globally. This mission is designed to drive systemic change, integrate SDoH into nursing practice, and ultimately promote a more equitable and just healthcare system.
